Four months on

We walked the farm again in early September.

The crop planted in May has closed over the ridges. Where there were separated plants with bare soil between them in August, the canopy now meets — which is what you want to see at this stage, because a closed canopy shades out weeds and holds moisture in the ridge instead of letting it off the surface.

The photographs in the gallery are from that visit. Several were taken from the same positions as the August set, so you can put them side by side: same ridge, same camera position, four weeks apart.

There is no stock photography anywhere on this site. Every picture is the ground we farm, taken on a dated visit, and when it stops being current we replace it rather than leaving last season standing in for this one.

Next is the long wait. Ginger takes its time, and the rhizome does most of its work out of sight in the final stretch.
