The crop goes in

Planting ran from the first days of May into late June.

Ginger is not sown, it is planted: seed rhizome is broken into setts by hand, each one carrying a viable bud, then dipped before it goes into the ridge. Do that badly and you find out four months later, when the gaps in the rows are permanent.

Organic matter went on ahead of the crop — 185 bags of poultry manure, spread and worked in. Fertiliser followed in June: fifty bags landed through Tema and carried down to the farm.

The soil was tested before any of this, not after. Sandy clay loam, pH 5.9 to 6.0, which is inside the band ginger wants. We planted where the ground already agreed with the crop rather than trying to argue it into shape afterwards.

Every activity from land preparation onward is logged. When a buyer asks what went onto a particular block and when, there is a record to read from.
